In the 1950s, creative young car enthusiasts combined traditional Hot Rod techniques with newly developed fiberglass technology, leading to innovative designs. Milt Brown, inspired by sports cars from England and Europe, aspired to create his own car that could rival Aston Martin and Ferrari. He designed a chassis from scratch and partnered with Frank Reisner of Carrozzeria Intermeccanica in Turin to build the car with a coachbuilt Italian body and Buick’s 215 cubic-inch aluminum V8 engine.
The Apollo GT, designed by Ron Plescia and refined by Franco Scaglione, was built in Italy and assembled in Oakland, California. It received praise for its performance and handling, and was even featured as the Thorndyke Special in “Herbie the Love Bug”. Despite favorable press, production costs and dealer challenges led to only 88 examples of the Apollo GT, 5000 GT, and Spyder being built.
This 1963 Apollo 3500 GT, chassis number 1004, features the original 215 cubic inch Buick engine and a four-speed manual gearbox. The interior, with black leather seats and Wilton carpet, retains its original style.
