1968 Triumph TR250 Overdrive
The Triumph TR5 is a sports car built by the Triumph Motor Company in Coventry, England, between August 1967 and September 1968. Visually similar to the Michelotti-designed TR4 roadster it was derived from, the TR5 replaced Triumph’s 105 bhp SAE Standard inline-four engine with the much more powerful Lucas mechanical fuel-injected 150 bhp (110 kW) Triumph 2.5-litre straight-6.
Two versions of the engine, and two new models, were unveiled at the same time. For sale only in North America, the TR250 was fitted with a 104bhp version of the engine, using twin 175CD Zenith-Stromberg carburetors. Visually, this car was identified by having transverse ‘speed stripes’ across the bonnet and front wings. In later years, a number of TR250s were re-imported to Europe.
For the ‘Rest of the World’, there was the TR5, which was fitted with a 150bhp version of the new ‘six’, this time with Lucas fuel injection as standard equipment. It was Britain’s first fuel-injected road car and could reach 120mph, with much fiercer acceleration than in any previous TR. These twin models, however, had a very short life, as the newly-shaped TR6 was already being planned and took over from both types by the end of 1968.
Our TR250 Overdrive: Our TR250 Overdrive is a stunning example, finished in Signal Red. It is more than ready for many more fun miles with the amount of work that has been done to it over the years. The car underwent a full restoration years ago, meaning that the bodywork and chassis are in excellent shape. The interior is also in excellent condition and has been fitted with a lovely leather Moto Lita steering wheel.
Mechanically, this TR250 has also been thoroughly sorted. The engine was completely rebuilt in 2014. In 2017, the previous owner overhauled the gearbox, differential, and Stromberg carburetors. The suspension and brakes have also been refreshed. A new Mohair soft top has been fitted and is in great condition. As this car is equipped with the optional overdrive, it is as lovely to drive on longer distances as it is on twisty roads.
This beautifully restored Triumph TR250, finished in vibrant Signal Red, is ready for countless enjoyable miles. Benefiting from a comprehensive restoration, the bodywork and chassis remain in excellent condition. The interior features a well-maintained cabin enhanced by a leather Moto Lita steering wheel.
