The Amphicar 770 (1961-1968) is a fascinating piece of automotive history, designed by German engineer Hans Trippel. Known as the world’s first mass-produced amphibious passenger car, it combines the novelty of a boat with the practicality of a car. Trippel, who had prior experience building amphibious vehicles for the German military in the 1930s and 1940s, turned his focus to this innovative project in the post-war era.
Originally developed for the US market, the Amphicar saw production from 1961 to 1968, with only 3,878 units built—3,046 of which were sold in the United States. Its rarity is further enhanced by its unique features: a rear-mounted 1147 cc four-cylinder engine powering both the wheels on land and two propellers for water navigation. Achieving a top speed of 70 mph on land and 7 mph in the water, the Amphicar quickly earned the nickname, “the fastest car on the water and the fastest boat on the road.”
This particular Amphicar stands out with its light blue exterior, complemented by a white and blue interior. It retains its original charm while offering an unmatched combination of automotive and nautical history. Additionally, the car is equipped with a unibody construction to ensure watertight integrity and a special transmission for seamless transitions between land and water.
The Amphicar’s appeal extended to notable owners, including US President Lyndon B. Johnson, who famously used his Amphicar to surprise guests by driving it directly into water, claiming his brakes had failed.
This rare, well-preserved 1964 Amphicar 770 presents a unique opportunity for collectors. Don’t miss your chance to own a piece of history that truly stands out on both land and water!
